Ishan Patel, MD
UNM HSC Clinical Informatic Fellow
Dr. Ishan Patel is a Clinical Informatics Fellow at the University of New Mexico. A native of Oregon, Dr. Patel completed his undergraduate studies, medical degree, and internal medicine residency at Oregon Health & Science University School of Medicine. He later relocated to New Mexico, where he completed a Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine Fellowship prior to beginning his training in Clinical Informatics.
Dr. Patel is board certified in Internal Medicine, Pulmonary Medicine, and Critical Care Medicine. He maintains an active clinical presence with a weekly pulmonary clinic at the New Mexico VA Medical Center.
His informatics interests include:
- Workflow efficiency
- Clinical decision support
- Improving documentation systems
Outside of medicine, Dr. Patel enjoys fly fishing, hiking, and spending quality time with his wife and young son.

Internal Medicine and Critical Care practice during his informatics fellowship. Dr. Williams completed his internal medicine residency at the University of Colorado, then after a chief year, completed his critical care fellowship at the University of Maryland. He joined UNM’s Clinical Informatics Fellowship in 2021. He and his wife enjoy many hikes and beautiful outdoor spaces that New Mexico has to offer. “Through this fellowship, I hope to gain a better understanding of not only clinical informatics but also healthcare system operations and optimization.”

Current is the Chief Health Informatics Officer at Augusta VA medical center. As the first fellow at UNM, he participated in process improvement, data mining, and technology implementation. “Clinical informatics is a lifelong learning process, and every single project teaches a new lesson. In my current role as CHIO, 70% of my work is related to these three domains.”
